dc.description.abstract | Horrific pain, death, suffering and destruction were witnessed by the humanity in the course of two wars that occurred in the twentieth century. This horror is commonly presented by numbers and statistical data. Often, however, this does not fully demonstrate the unbearable harm that an armed conflict causes to mind, soul and mentality of everyone involved. This includes war prisoners who witness their rights and freedoms being snatched away as the consequence of a war. This article focuses on the conditions and labor of the Asia Pacific War (9 August 1945 – 2 September 1945) prisoners held by the People’s Republic of Mongolia (the PRM) which was the ally of the Soviet Union during the World War II. The Soviet Union captured 640,105 prisoners after the liberation war against Japan. 609.448 of them were low-ranking officers, soldiers and non-combatants, while 260 prisoners were high-ranking officers. Starting from 20 November 1945 for period of 20 days the PRM received 12,318 prisoners without a name list, which included 15 high-ranking officers, 678 middle-ranking officers, 2,178 low-ranking officers, 8,079 soldiers and 1,368 non-combatants. 3 The prisoners were delivered on 6 separate occasions by truck convoy to the PRM. | en_US |
