The purpose of the study is to depict the culture images of the society when the pictures were taken through the visual codes of the pictures, and to understand the political, cultural, and educational phenomena of the time, and the system of values of the contemporary society. By means of observing old pictures taken some fifty or sixty years ago, the figures on the pictures recaptured the circumstances of mainland China during the Chinese Civil War which they had gone through. Verified with the related contemporary historical records and documents, we can be certain that the civil war between the Nationalist Army and the Communist rebel had made a great impact over all of the people, military and civilian alike, in China. It is also verified that roughly 1.2 million soldiers and civilians retreated from mainland China to Taiwan had also made significant impact on Taiwan society at the same time and until this day. Also, through analyses of many interviews and concerned documents, we can reconstruct a picture about the public opinion over cross-strait marriage at that time.mnArticle
