Abstract

A reform of cultural policies, including the policies for development of cultural industries as one of the contents of Doi Moi (Renovation), has been carried out in Vietnam since 1986. The radical changes in the cultural policies, especially the acceptance of market-based principles in cultural activities have created initial positive conditions for development of the cultural industries in Vietnam. In practice, such policy and institutional changes have been creating major preconditions for the Vietnamese cultural industries to be founded and developed. Yet, the realities of development of the cultural industries at present have exposed a number of weaknesses and challenges, requiring further adjustments and improvements from the policy-makers.
